Preview for 2011 R+L Carriers Bowl, December 17

The Louisiana Superdome will come to life on December 17th as the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl begins. The San Diego State Aztecs face the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns in a battle for the championship. The Aztecs come into play with an 8-4 record and a 4-3 record in their MWC. The Aztecs average 29.8 points per game on offense and 24.4 points per game on defense.

The Aztecs are led by senior QB Ryan Lindley (2,740 yards – 52.5 completion pct – 20 td’s / 8 int – 122.9 rating). The running game is in competent hands with phenom sophomore running back Ronnie Hillman (287 carries – 1,656 yards – 19 td’s). Hillman had a 99-yard touchdown run in a game against Wyoming on October 29th. Hillman reminds many of previous Aztecs star and latest NFL Hall Of Famer Marshall Faulk who also ran all over the field against opposing defenses in the early 1990′s.

The Ragin’ Cajuns defense will have their hands full in trying to stifle Ronnie Hillman on the ground. Both defenses will surely get a workout in this shootout of two great squads. The two-way threat of Gautier versus the ground game of Hillman will be on display. Both teams will look to put a lot of points on the board in this classic.

Continuing Negotiations Between NFL Owners and Players

When asked if he would intervene in the current situation in the NFL, avid football fan and President of the United States Barrack Obama put his realistic spin on the whole situation. “If a group of Owner that are Billionaires, and a group of players that are millionaires can’t come to a compromise in this day and age when all are being asked to cut back then there is a problem,” commented the President. “The President of the United States should not have to get involved.”

The question you must be asking yourself is: Can these two groups be that stubborn and stupid? One would hope the answer to this would be no and that all this hype and discussion is for nothing. The hope is that intelligence will prevail over greed, and the world of professional football will continue to spin. No matter how greedy you think owners like Jerry Jones and Al Davis are, fans have to hope that they reasonable and intelligent enough to not allow a protracted labor war to take place.

Strong Football Teams and Close Odds Mark Super Bowl XLV

It is hard to argue that two of the most exciting teams in the NFL made it to the Super Bowl this year. After all, if the Chicago Bears had come back from their loss to the Green Bay Packers, would anyone really have any doubts that the Steelers would crush them? But with a Steelers versus Packers Super Bowl XLV, fans of the game have an almost perfect matchup.

The Steelers come to the big game as six-time champions on the AFC side, while the Packers have their own record of success with 3 Super Bowl victories and more wins before there even was a game called the “Super” Bowl. In past decades, both teams have proven they can play under the most difficult of situations and still elevate their play to a championship level.

Sport Book

Both teams have amazing quarterbacks and offensive squads, but the real test of a Super Bowl winner is its defense. And in this regard, both Green Bay and Pittsburgh outshine much of the rest of the NFL. The Packers have allowed just 15.0 points per game, which is second in the league, while the Steelers come in at number one, having allowed only 14.5 points per game. Defense has allowed both teams to make it this far, and will determine who will win the 2011 Super Bowl.

As good as each of the team’s quarterbacks have performed over the regular season and playoffs, neither have really played against such a similar powerhouse in terms of defensive strength. If one of the football teams’ offenses can break through, we may end up with a high-scoring Super Bowl game. But if not, we may witness a war of attrition between two of the best teams playing in the NFL right now.

Packers wagering

In any event, there is no mismatch between the teams playing in the Super Bowl this year. It is highly unlikely that we will see a blowout one way or the other, barring some unforeseen freak occurrence. But as with most championship games, victory will rely on the higher performance of the defensive teams to stop the other quarterback’s drive down the field.

Ugly Division Championship Games Lead to 2011 Super Bowl

The history of the NFL playoffs is littered with ugly games, but the winners of enough of those games often make it to the Super Bowl. But in 2011, both the AFC and NFC division championships were won by good teams playing ugly games against underdogs that almost beat them. The Packers and Steelers survived, true, but neither team played remarkably well this past weekend.

And that can mean problems for either team’s chances to win the Super Bowl. In the second half of the NFC division championship, the Chicago Bears almost came back from being down by 14 points to take the Packers’ place in the Super Bowl. If Bears QB Cutler had been in the game the whole time, we may have been looking forward to a Steelers-Bears matchup.

Super Bowl wagers

The Steelers did not do much better in their division championship game against the Jets. The Jets and the Steelers were pretty evenly matched, but New York came out playing like they didn’t feel they belonged in the Super Bowl. Being down 24 points in the second half, the team engineered a remarkable comeback, but it was just short of putting them on top of the game.

So, instead of an underdog from either division making it to the Super Bowl this year, we get to watch two good teams battle it out, despite their not having played up to their full potentials in their previous games. And with all the excitement, distractions, and stress that come along with every year’s bowl game, can we expect either the Packers or the Steelers to play really well?

Green Bay Packers wagers

If one team or the other had crushed their opponents last week and decisively taken either the AFC or the NFC championship, it may be easier to predict with team would win the Super Bowl. But with both teams coming off pretty ugly second quarters that could have cost either team their chance at Super Bowl glory at all, picking a favorite becomes much more difficult.

Currently, sportsbook odds are leaning toward the Packers as the slight favorite to win in 2011.

Super Bowl Odds for the Pittsburgh Steelers

Can the Pittsburgh Steelers put together two decent halves of football? If not, then you can give the Lombardi trophy to the Green Bay Packers right now. While the Steelers were able to squeak by the Ravens after giving up 21 points in the first half, they may not have so many opportunities to make mistakes in the Super Bowl.

Furthermore, the Steelers had a terrible second half in the AFC championship game against the Jets. Pittsburgh went into the halftime up by three touchdowns, and then ended up winning the game by just five points. Going from a three touchdown lead to winning the game by less than one touchdown shows that the Steelers have had some problems with consistency in the 2011 NFL Playoffs.

In the Super Bowl, Pittsburgh will not have the leeway to have one good half and one bad half. In order to win it all, the team will have to put together a pair of good halves and have a well-rounded game offensively and defensively. The Green Bay Packers are a better team than either the Jets or the Ravens, both of which the Steelers had some problems beating decisively.

With the strong defense of the Packers, Pittsburgh will not be able to take half the game off and rely on just a couple of quarters of solid football. They will have to come with the A-game for both halves in order to win the 2011 Super Bowl, and sports betting odds are already favoring the Green Bay Packers. While the Packers may not be a whole lot better than the Ravens or Jets, they will force Pittsburgh to play more than one half a game of football.

The Packers also have a solid offense, quite unlike the Jets and the Ravens which both suffered from having great offenses. All in all, Green Bay will be a much more difficult team to beat than any the Steelers have played thus far in their march to the Super Bowl. If they can put together two good halves, however, the Super Bowl betting odds may be wrong this year and the Steelers will win it all.
